The Smithtown community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Valerie Rose Kratochvil, a young and talented student-athlete. She was born on November 8, 2007, in New York, and sadly passed away unexpectedly on March 4, 2024, at the age of just 16. A Life of Academic Excellence
Valerie was a hardworking and successful student at Smithtown High School East. She always got top grades (straight A’s), showing how much she cared about her education and her goal of becoming a pharmacist. She was actively involved in different academic clubs, including the Music, French, and Social Studies Honor Societies, and was close to joining the National Honor Society. Her passion for learning and dedication made her stand out, gaining respect from both her teachers and classmates.
A Passion for Music
Valerie loved music and it was a very important part of her life. She had an amazing singing voice and took part in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) for three years. Because of her talent, she was chosen to be in the All-County Choir for two years in a row. Every time she sang, her passion for music was clear, and her beautiful voice inspired everyone who heard her.
Athletic Achievements
Valerie was not only talented in academics and music but also an outstanding athlete. She was part of the Varsity teams for both Winter and Spring Track, as well as the Varsity Field Hockey team at Smithtown High School East. She also played for the Long Island Field Hockey Club. In addition, she participated in the Athletes Helping Athletes Club, where she mentored younger athletes and shared her passion for sports.
Personal Interests and Family Bond
Known affectionately as “Val” by her loved ones, Valerie had a deep love for reading, often visiting bookstores to find her next great novel. She also had a flair for fashion, enjoyed shopping, styling her hair, and experimenting with makeup. Cooking and baking were other passions she delighted in, often trying new recipes to share with family and friends.
Valerie loved traveling with her family, creating cherished memories on ski trips to Vermont and Lake Tahoe, vacations in the Caribbean, and visits to Disney World. Her vibrant personality and adventurous spirit brought joy to every moment she spent with those she loved.
She is survived by her parents, Margaret and Kenneth, and her twin sister, Laurie. Her extended family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins, also mourns her loss. She was predeceased by her grandparents Marilyn and Kenneth Kratochvil, Ann and Matthew Fee, and great-grandfather Vincent Petrolino.
A Community in Mourning
The news of Valerie’s passing sent shockwaves through the Smithtown community. Described by many as a “bright light,” her kindness, intelligence, and unwavering compassion touched everyone she met. Her mother, Margaret Kratochvil, shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing the family’s profound grief and their love for Valerie.
To support the Kratochvil family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe campaign was created by Long Island Field Hockey Director Mallory Guerin. The fundraiser aims to assist the family with funeral expenses and financial support while they take time to grieve.
Funeral Services and Tributes
Valerie’s funeral services will take place at St. James Funeral Home on March 9 and 10, with visitation hours from 2-4 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on March 11 at the Parish of The Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Nesconset.
Friends, family, and community members continue to pay tribute to Valerie’s remarkable life through touching messages, social media posts, and shared memories. Her funeral service will provide an opportunity for all who knew her to come together, celebrate her life, and say their final goodbyes.
